Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar (RTS) installations in one crore households are projected to generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over their 25-year lifespan, reducing 720 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions.
Since its launch in February 2024, the scheme has added 9,566.89 MW of rooftop solar capacity across India as of 20 March 2026. The initiative is also expected to create approximately 17 lakh jobs in areas such as manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales and installation, operations and maintenance services, and financial services.
PMSG: MBY is a demand-driven scheme open to all residential consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection from local DISCOMs. Beneficiaries can apply online via the National Portal to avail subsidies for RTS systems.
To promote rooftop solar adoption and achieve the target of one crore household installations, the Ministry has implemented several measures:
- End-to-end online process: Applications to subsidy disbursal directly into consumer bank accounts.
- Collateral-free loans: Available from nationalized banks at concessional interest (currently repo rate + 50 bps, i.e., 5.75% per annum) for 10-year tenures.
- Regulatory simplifications: Waived technical feasibility requirements and introduced auto load enhancement up to 10 kW.
- Net metering integration: Part of the application process on the National Portal.
- RESCO/Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) models: Incorporated to facilitate adoption.
- Vendor registration: Simplified to ensure availability of qualified service providers.
- Capacity building: Training programs to develop skilled manpower.
- Awareness campaigns: Print, TV, and radio outreach nationwide, including regional channels.
- Monitoring and review: Regular progress checks at national and state levels, including DISCOM coordination.
- Grievance redressal: Call center (15555) operational in 12 languages to resolve issues promptly.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), along with REC Ltd. as the National Programme Implementing Agency (NPIA), continues to coordinate closely with DISCOMs to ensure effective implementation of PMSG: MBY.
