Axpo has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with McDonald’s franchises in Spain to supply renewable electricity from a newly developed solar power complex in the province of León.

The solar installation, located across the municipalities of Villadangos del Páramo and Cimanes del Tejar, has a total installed capacity of 200 MWp. The complex consists of four photovoltaic plants, each generating 50 MWp, forming a significant addition to Spain’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The agreement, facilitated in collaboration with ZConsultores Energéticos, will enable participating McDonald’s restaurants to be powered by photovoltaic energy. Under the PPA, McDonald’s is expected to secure approximately 83 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar energy annually, supporting its efforts to reduce carbon emissions across its Spanish operations.

According to Axpo Iberia CEO Ignacio Soneira, the partnership reflects a strong alignment between the sustainability goals of both companies. He noted that the agreement demonstrates how renewable energy solutions can be effectively scaled across industries while contributing to broader decarbonization objectives.

The initiative forms part of McDonald’s broader environmental strategy in Spain, which extends beyond renewable energy to include circular economy practices, sustainable packaging, and electric mobility. The collaboration is also aligned with the company’s global target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

This agreement is integrated into McDonald’s “Happy Change” sustainability initiative, under which the company is implementing energy, recycling, and packaging projects across its network of more than 660 restaurants in Spain.

Axpo Iberia, established in 2001, provides a range of energy solutions including electricity, gas, solar energy, biomass, and biomethane, along with market representation and energy efficiency services for businesses across Spain.
