The Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited has approached the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission seeking approval to amend its distribution and retail supply license. The request, filed on April 4, 2026, aims to formally expand its service area by including regions earlier served by the Cooperative Electric Supply Society Ltd in the Rajanna Sircilla district.
This development follows a directive issued by the Commission on March 31, 2026, under which TGNPDCL was instructed to take over electricity distribution and retail supply services for consumers of CESS on a temporary basis. Soon after, the Government of Telangana issued an order on April 2, 2026, authorizing the companyโs leadership to apply for a formal amendment to its license so that the transition can be made permanent.
TGNPDCL began operating in the Sircilla area on April 1, 2026. Through its petition, the company has requested that the amendment be applied retrospectively from this date. The filing has been made under Section 18 of the Electricity Act, 2003, which allows changes in the terms and conditions of a distribution license.
Apart from the inclusion of Sircilla, the company has also updated its application to reflect administrative changes in the state. Over the years, several districts have been reorganized, including the division of Warangal into Hanamkonda and Warangal districts. These changes are being incorporated into the revised license to ensure that the operational boundaries are clearly defined.
The history of the company goes back to December 2000, when the license was originally granted to the Northern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Ltd. After the formation of Telangana in 2014, the company underwent name changes and adjustments in its service areas. In 2017, it also received approval to include areas transferred from the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited.
In the latest proposal, TGNPDCL has requested approval to operate across 18 districts, including Warangal, Hanamkonda, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalpalli, and Nizamabad. A key part of this proposal is the formal inclusion of all consumers who were earlier under the CESS Sircilla network.
The company has also requested the Commission to allow submission of additional details if required and to pass any further orders needed to complete the process. This transition represents a shift from a cooperative-based power distribution model in Sircilla to a state-run system. The move is expected to bring more uniformity and help ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply for consumers in the region.
