Amazon has announced its largest renewable energy investment in Australia, marking a major step in its sustainability journey. The company has signed nine new power purchase agreements that will add 430 megawatts (MW) of clean energy to the countryโs grid. With this expansion, Amazonโs total renewable energy capacity in Australia has reached nearly 1 gigawatt (990 MW). Once all the projects become operational, they are expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 500,000 homes every year.
The newly announced portfolio includes a mix of different renewable energy solutions. It features one wind farm, three large solar projects combined with battery storage, four smaller distributed solar and battery systems, and a new battery installation at the Mokoan Solar Farm. A key highlight of this investment is the strong focus on energy storage. Out of the nine projects, eight include battery systems, showing Amazonโs growing emphasis on grid stability and reliable clean energy supply.
This development is also significant because it marks Amazonโs first solar-battery hybrid projects in Australia. These are also the companyโs first such projects outside the United States, indicating a broader global strategy to integrate renewable energy with storage solutions.
The projects are spread across New South Wales and Victoria, and some of them use innovative land solutions. For example, the Muswellbrook solar project is being developed on land that was previously used for coal mining and has since been rehabilitated. This shows how old industrial sites can be reused for clean energy generation. In addition, some projects are designed with โagri-solarโ concepts, where livestock can graze around and under solar panels, allowing the land to remain useful for farming while also producing electricity.
By investing in these renewable energy projects, Amazon is supporting both its own climate goals and the broader energy transition in Australia. The additional clean energy capacity will help supply electricity to homes, schools, and hospitals while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. According to BloombergNEF, Amazon was the largest corporate buyer of carbon-free energy in Australia in 2025.
This initiative is part of Amazonโs global commitment to The Climate Pledge, which aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. It also aligns with the companyโs larger plan to invest AU$20 billion in digital infrastructure in Australia. As Amazon expands its data centers and artificial intelligence operations, these renewable energy projects will ensure that its growth is supported by sustainable and reliable power. Since 2020, the company has already invested around AU$2.8 billion in renewable energy in Australia.
