GAIL (India) Limited has approved an investment of ₹3,800 crore to set up 700 MW of solar power projects across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, marking a major step in its clean energy expansion plans.

Out of the total capacity, the company will develop a 600 MW solar power project along with a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at TUSCO Solar Park Jhansi. This project is aimed at meeting the captive energy requirements of GAIL’s petrochemical plant located in Pata, Auraiya district. The integration of battery storage will help manage fluctuations in solar power generation and ensure a stable supply of electricity.

In addition to this, GAIL will also set up a 100 MW solar power project with a 22 MWh BESS in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district. This facility will cater to the captive energy needs of its PDH-PP plant at Usar, Raigad district. Both projects are designed to support GAIL’s industrial operations while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

The company stated that these initiatives are part of its broader strategy to achieve net zero emissions and align with India’s clean energy transition goals. By combining solar power generation with advanced energy storage systems, GAIL aims to address the intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy and ensure round-the-clock power availability.

Speaking on the development, Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta said that the company’s installed renewable energy capacity is expected to rise significantly to over 1,000 MW from the current 147 MW once these projects are commissioned. He highlighted that the expansion reflects GAIL’s commitment to sustainable growth while ensuring long-term energy security.

With these projects, GAIL continues to strengthen its position as an integrated energy company, balancing its portfolio between conventional and renewable energy sources while actively contributing to India’s low-carbon future.
