Across Sub-Saharan Africa, the need for reliable and affordable electricity is accelerating the shift from standalone solar toward integrated solar-plus-storage solutions. Unstable grids, frequent outages, limited electricity access and the high cost of diesel generation are driving households to seek greater energy independence and resilient backup power. In this exclusive interaction with SolarQuarter, Lucas Lu, Head of GoodWe, Sub-Saharan Africa, GoodWe Technologies Company Limited, discusses the region’s evolving residential energy landscape, the role of the new EO G2 residential hybrid inverter, and GoodWe’s approach to strengthening local partnerships, technical support and long-term customer service across African markets.
1. What key energy challenges are driving demand for solar and storage solutions across Sub-Saharan Africa?
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, demand is being driven by a very practical need: reliable and affordable electricity. Many households still face unstable grids, frequent outages or limited grid access, while diesel generation remains costly to sustain. At the same time, the region has excellent solar resources. This is pushing customers beyond simple solar generation toward systems that can store energy, provide backup power and give households more control over when and how they use electricity.
2. What makes GoodWe’s new EO G2 residential hybrid inverter particularly suited to African households and local energy conditions?
The EO G2 is designed specifically for these conditions. It is a residential offgrid inverter, with 3–6 kW models, whole-home backup capability, direct generator connection and support for parallel operation of up to ten units. Its IP66 protection and operating range from -35°C to 60°C suit demanding environments. It also supports up to 200% PV oversizing, 21A PV input per string and sub-4 millisecond switching, helping installers build flexible systems around modern PV modules and local load requirements.
3. In what ways does the EO G2 address customer priorities around reliability, affordability and greater energy independence?
Reliability, affordability and energy independence have to be addressed together. A key part of reliability is the EO G2’s IP66 protection. Compared with conventional IP20 products commonly seen in the market, IP66 provides much stronger protection against dust and water ingress, helping the inverter maintain stable operation in demanding African environments and supporting a longer service life. For homeowners, this means greater confidence in stable power generation over the lifetime of the system, rather than focusing only on the initial purchase price. Fast backup switching and generator integration further strengthen supply reliability. Affordability is about long-term system value: high PV oversizing allows households to harvest more solar energy without unnecessarily increasing inverter capacity, while the high efficiency of the EO G2 helps reduce conversion losses. Most importantly, customers can depend less on an unstable grid or fuel-based backup.
4. Could you share how GoodWe is strengthening its local presence, partnerships and technical support across Sub-Saharan Africa?
GoodWe has been operating in Africa since 2015, with offices in Johannesburg, Nairobi and Lagos. We combine global products and, Research and Development (R&D) capabilities with stronger local execution. We are expanding local sales and technical teams, working closely with distributors and installers, strengthening solar solutions training and after-sales support, and improving product availability in key markets. For us, local presence means being closer to installers and end customers throughout the lifecycle of a system, not only at the point of sale.
5. Looking ahead, what trends will shape the region’s residential solar and storage market, and where does GoodWe see its role?
Residential solar in Africa will increasingly become solar-plus-storage rather than solar alone. We expect stronger demand for affordable lithium batteries, smarter energy management, generator integration, scalable backup and products designed for weak-grid or off-grid conditions. Installation quality, financing and after-sales service will also become more important as the market matures. GoodWe sees its role as providing reliable, locally relevant solutions across inverters, batteries and energy management, while continuing to invest in local partnerships, technical capability and long-term customer support.
