Abu Qir Fertilizers & Chemicals Company, AlexFert, Orascom Construction SAE, and UEG Green Hydrogen Development Holding Limited (UEG), along with Valmore Holding, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the development of a Mediterranean Green Hydrogen Hub Project in Alexandria. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of EGYPES 2026, under the patronage of Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The initiative aims to strengthen Egypt’s position as a regional and global hub for clean energy and aligns with the country’s Vision 2030 and national energy transition strategy.

Under the MoU, UEG and Orascom Construction will lead feasibility studies for 500 MW of renewable energy capacity, combining wind and solar, along with green hydrogen production infrastructure. Meanwhile, Abu Qir Fertilizers and AlexFert will evaluate the integration of green hydrogen into ammonia production processes, targeting output of around 480 tons per day of renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) ammonia. The partners will also assess the use of existing infrastructure and local resources to support project development.

The agreement establishes a framework for technical, commercial, and regulatory studies, with the intention of progressing toward definitive agreements subject to feasibility outcomes.

Commenting on the development, H.E. Eng. Hany Dahy, Chairman of Abu Qir Fertilizers & Chemicals Company, said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to advancing low-carbon ammonia production through integration of green hydrogen solutions.

UEG representatives highlighted plans to build a scalable green hydrogen platform in Egypt to support both domestic industries and export markets, while Orascom Construction noted ongoing technical evaluations to enable competitive and reliable large-scale green hydrogen production.

AlexFert stated that the project presents opportunities to integrate green hydrogen into ammonia production processes, enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency. Valmore Holding emphasized that the initiative aligns with its long-term strategy to strengthen sustainable growth in the chemicals and energy sectors and position Alexandria as a green fuel hub.

AlexFert, established in 2003 and a subsidiary of Valmore Holding, is a key producer of nitrogen-based fertilizers, including ammonia, urea, and ammonium sulphate, operating a production facility in Alexandria spanning 110,000 square meters. Valmore Holding is a diversified investment group with interests across chemicals, building materials, utilities, oil and gas, and financial services, and is dual-listed on the Egyptian Stock Exchange and Boursa Kuwait.
