BHEL Partners With Hystar To Advance PEM Electrolyzers Technology For Green Hydrogen

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) with Norway-based Hystar AS to collaborate on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects. BHEL disclosed the development to BSE Limited and the National Stock Exchange of India on August 13, 2026, under Regulation 30 of SEBI regulations.

The partnership is aimed at supporting the phased indigenization and local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser technology in India. It is expected to strengthen BHEL’s capabilities in executing green hydrogen projects and contribute to the development of a domestic supply chain for advanced electrolyser systems.

The agreement builds on BHEL’s growing focus on electrolyser technologies. In July 2026, the company entered into a strategic collaboration with thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited for alkaline electrolyser systems.

With the latest agreement, BHEL will have access to both alkaline and PEM electrolyser technologies, enabling it to offer solutions across the two major electrolyser categories used in green hydrogen production. This could strengthen the company’s position in India’s rapidly developing green hydrogen market.

PEM Electrolyzers are known for their ability to respond quickly to changes in electricity supply, making them suitable for integration with variable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

The collaboration also supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the government’s Make in India initiative by encouraging domestic manufacturing and technology development.

BHEL said the financial details related to consideration paid or received under the agreement are confidential. The company’s latest partnership highlights its efforts to expand its clean energy portfolio and participate in India’s transition toward a low-carbon hydrogen economy.
