Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, has stated that green jobs and green entrepreneurship will play a central role in shaping India’s future economy, driven by sectors such as renewable energy, electric mobility, green fuels, and the circular economy.
Speaking at the valedictory session of the National Conference on “Environmental Sustainability in the 21st Century: Science, Society and Solutions” held at Jamia Millia Islamia on the occasion of Earth Day, the minister highlighted that the transition towards a green economy will not only generate large-scale employment but also accelerate India’s shift to sustainable and low-carbon growth.
He pointed to the government’s focus on building a robust green ecosystem, citing initiatives such as the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which has an outlay of over ₹19,000 crore and is expected to support decarbonisation across key industrial sectors including steel and cement.
Dr. Singh emphasised the rapid pace of technological advancements, noting that continuous innovation will be essential to keep up with evolving sustainability solutions. He also highlighted grassroots innovations in electric mobility, where conventional vehicles are being converted into electric alternatives, making clean technologies more accessible and scalable.
The minister further noted that emerging opportunities in solar manufacturing, battery production, grid management, and biofuels are expected to drive employment growth in the coming years. He also identified the circular economy—such as converting used cooking oil into biofuel—as a key area for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Highlighting future energy prospects, Dr. Singh pointed to ocean energy as an untapped resource that could complement solar and wind power, given India’s extensive coastline. He also underscored the country’s progress in expanding nuclear energy capacity and enabling private sector participation in strategic sectors such as space and nuclear energy.
Referring to the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund, the minister said the initiative aims to support startups and innovators through a collaborative funding approach involving both government and private stakeholders.
Emphasising India’s global role in climate action, Dr. Singh stated that the country is well-positioned to lead the global green transition, guided by the “Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)” vision promoted by Narendra Modi.
He also encouraged students and young researchers to actively engage in sustainability-driven opportunities, noting that the future economy will be shaped by innovation, adaptability, and youth-led initiatives.
