UK-based green hydrogen developer Protium has acquired the Scottish green hydrogen portfolio of Storegga, strengthening its position in the country’s rapidly evolving low-carbon hydrogen sector.
The acquisition includes the flagship Cromarty Hydrogen Project along with several early-stage hydrogen developments across Scotland. The transaction marks a strategic shift for Storegga as the company sharpens its focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives, including the Acorn CCS project.
The Cromarty Hydrogen Project is among the UK’s early government-supported green hydrogen developments and previously secured backing under the UK government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 (HAR1) programme. The project was designed to supply green hydrogen for industrial decarbonisation applications, including distilleries, transport operators, and industrial users in Scotland.
With the acquisition, Protium is expected to expand its hydrogen production pipeline and strengthen its presence in Scotland’s emerging hydrogen economy. The company has been actively scaling its hydrogen infrastructure portfolio in the UK through operational green hydrogen facilities and supply solutions targeting industrial and mobility sectors.
Industry observers view the transaction as part of a broader consolidation trend emerging across the hydrogen industry, where companies with operational expertise and infrastructure capabilities are acquiring strategically positioned development-stage assets.
The deal also reflects changing market dynamics within the UK hydrogen sector, where developers are increasingly prioritising commercially viable projects backed by government support mechanisms and long-term industrial demand.
Scotland continues to attract significant interest for green hydrogen investments due to its abundant renewable energy resources, established industrial base, and growing role in the UK’s net-zero transition strategy.
The acquisition is expected to support the advancement of the Cromarty Hydrogen Project toward future commercial deployment while enhancing Protium’s role in supporting industrial decarbonisation and low-carbon fuel adoption across the UK.
