Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a leading renewable energy company in India and a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has successfully completed a significant milestone by commissioning the first commercial rooftop solar project in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The project is a 50 kWp rooftop solar installation at Hotel Barath in Leh and represents an important step in the regionโ€™s shift toward clean and sustainable energy solutions.

The project was executed by TPREL in collaboration with its channel partner Silk Route Energy. It was formally inaugurated by Shri Rudra Goud P.T., IAS, Administrative Secretary, Power Development Department and New & Renewable Energy, UT Ladakh. The ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Shri Tsewang Paljor, Chief Engineer of LPDD, and Tundup Spalzang, Superintending Engineer, along with representatives from key industry and trade bodies such as the All Ladakh Hotel and Guest House Association (ALHGHA), ALTOA, ALGHA, Merchant Association, as well as officials from Tata Power Solar, Silk Route Energy, and other stakeholders.

This rooftop solar installation is the result of nearly five years of sustained efforts aimed at promoting renewable energy adoption in the region. It also serves as a strong example of how clean energy solutions can be implemented in remote and high-altitude areas like Ladakh. The project highlights the increasing feasibility of rooftop solar systems, especially when supported by accessible financing options such as MSME-linked loan facilities.

These financial mechanisms are helping make solar adoption more practical and scalable for local businesses and hospitality operators.TPREL has also worked closely with the All Ladakh Hotel and Guest House Association (ALHGHA) to raise awareness about the benefits of rooftop solar energy and encourage wider adoption across the tourism and hospitality sector.

Several additional installations are already planned, indicating growing interest and momentum in the region. The tourism industry, which plays a vital role in Ladakhโ€™s economy, is expected to benefit significantly from such clean energy initiatives. By integrating solar power into hotel and guesthouse operations, businesses can reduce their dependency on conventional electricity sources, lower operational costs, and reduce their environmental footprint.
