Avangrid has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft for the 140 MWdc (100 MWac) Bluebird Solar project in Klickitat County, Washington, further expanding the companies’ renewable energy partnership in the United States.
With the addition of Bluebird Solar, the total contracted energy capacity between Avangrid and Microsoft in the U.S. has now exceeded 500 MW. The project marks the fourth energy agreement between the two companies, following previously signed PPAs for Powell Creek Solar in Ohio, Camino Solar in California, and Juniper Canyon Wind in Washington.
According to Avangrid, Bluebird Solar is expected to begin commercial operations in 2028. The project is anticipated to generate around 300 construction jobs, primarily through local union labour, while also supporting permanent operations and maintenance roles after commissioning.
Avangrid stated that Bluebird Solar represents an investment of approximately USD 300 million in Klickitat County and is projected to contribute nearly USD 11 million in local property tax revenues over its operational lifetime, supporting regional public services and infrastructure development.
The project will be located near four other Avangrid-operated renewable energy facilities in Klickitat County. The company noted that the project’s name draws inspiration from the region’s large bluebird population, with the nearby town of Bickleton widely recognised as the “Bluebird Capital of the World.”
Commenting on the agreement, Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda said the project strengthens the company’s long-term collaboration with Microsoft while supporting growing electricity demand from major technology companies through renewable energy deployment.
Avangrid currently operates more than 11 GW of installed renewable energy capacity across nearly 100 projects spanning 25 states in the U.S.
