Malaysia Announces RM150 Million SuRIA Home Scheme To Support 50,000 Residential Solar Installations

The Malaysian government has launched a new initiative named Sustainable Rebate and Incentive Assistance (SuRIA) Home to encourage the adoption of residential solar energy systems across the country. The program was introduced by Petra, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, as part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce electricity costs for households and strengthen the nation’s renewable energy sector.

The initiative comes at a time when Malaysia is experiencing the impact of the global energy supply crisis caused by ongoing conflicts in West Asia. Rising energy prices and concerns over electricity costs have increased the government’s focus on clean and sustainable energy solutions. Through SuRIA Home, the government aims to help citizens lower their monthly electricity bills while promoting the use of rooftop solar systems.

To support the program, the Malaysian government has allocated RM150 million in funding. Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that domestic users participating in the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) will be eligible for financial assistance. Under the scheme, homeowners can receive a rebate of RM600 for every kilowatt-alternating current (kWac) of solar capacity installed. The maximum rebate available is RM3,000 per household, equivalent to a solar system capacity of 5kWac.

The government expects the initiative to benefit around 45,000 to 50,000 households nationwide. Authorities also estimate that the program could contribute approximately 250MW of cumulative residential solar capacity, helping to expand Malaysia’s rooftop solar market significantly.

Rebate claims under the SuRIA Home initiative will officially open on June 1, 2026. However, the government has clarified that the scheme will operate on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited funding and capacity. The program will continue until December 31, 2026, or until the 250MW quota is fully utilized.

To ensure fair distribution of incentives, strict eligibility requirements have been introduced. Only Malaysian citizens registered as individual domestic low-voltage consumers can apply. In addition, applicants must have successfully connected and commenced operations of their Solar ATAP systems with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB). Each eligible individual is allowed to submit only one rebate application under the scheme.
