Google, AirTrunk, and European Energy Australia have announced that the 25 MW Mulwala Solar Farm in the Riverina region of New South Wales is nearing completion and is set to commence operations, adding new renewable energy capacity to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM).
The project, first announced in 2023 under a corporate power purchase agreement (PPA), is expected to contribute additional clean energy to the grid while supporting Australia’s ongoing energy transition. The solar farm is also aligned with Google’s long-term objective of operating on carbon-free energy around the clock.
The partners stated that the development demonstrates how collaboration between technology companies, digital infrastructure providers, and renewable energy developers can help meet growing electricity demand while accelerating decarbonization efforts. As Australia continues to expand its digital economy and artificial intelligence capabilities, the project seeks to ensure that increased digital infrastructure is supported by additional renewable energy generation.
According to Google, the Mulwala Solar Farm forms part of its broader Digital Future Initiative in Australia, which focuses on supporting sustainable digital infrastructure development. The company noted that the project delivers both environmental and community benefits by bringing new renewable energy capacity online.
AirTrunk highlighted the role of hyperscale data centers in facilitating investments in renewable energy projects and strengthening long-term energy security. The company stated that collaborations between the technology and renewable energy sectors can help accelerate the deployment of clean energy assets while generating economic and community benefits.
European Energy Australia said partnerships between major technology firms and renewable energy developers are important for advancing Australia’s energy transition. The company added that such initiatives provide greater confidence for the continued development of solar and wind energy projects across the country.
The Mulwala Solar Farm is expected to inject renewable electricity into the National Electricity Market upon commissioning, supporting both Australia’s clean energy targets and the growing energy requirements of the digital economy.
