Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, reviewed the progress of power sector reforms and urban development initiatives in Tripura during a high-level meeting held in Agartala.
The meeting was attended by Manik Saha, the State’s Power Minister, and senior officials from the Government of Tripura, the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, and power sector public sector enterprises.
During the review, the Union Minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive action plan to strengthen the State’s power sector performance. Discussions focused on the implementation of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), operational efficiency, and the financial health of the State’s distribution utilities.
Manohar Lal stressed the importance of reducing Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses and improving revenue realization. He called for accelerated deployment of prepaid smart metering, particularly for government consumers and establishments, to enhance billing efficiency and revenue collection.
Reviewing the progress of smart meter installations, the State Government committed to converting all government consumers to prepaid metering by August 2026 and completing the remaining smart metering works by July 2027.
The Minister also assessed Tripura’s resource adequacy planning and intra-state transmission infrastructure requirements to support rising electricity demand. He advised the State to ensure timely expansion of transmission capacity in line with future demand projections. In response, the State committed to expediting transmission network augmentation and implementing measures outlined in its resource adequacy plan.
Progress under the PM-KUSUM scheme and the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was also reviewed during the meeting. The Union Minister urged the State to maximize the benefits of these programs to increase clean energy access, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
As part of its renewable energy expansion plans, Tripura committed to installing rooftop solar systems for 200,000 consumers by March 2027. According to the government, the initiative is expected to enhance clean energy adoption while reducing electricity costs for participating households.
The Union Minister stated that sustained efforts toward operational efficiency and financial discipline would help make the State’s distribution sector financially viable and support the long-term self-sufficiency of Tripura’s power sector.
He also assured continued support from the Government of India for the State’s overall development. Chief Minister Manik Saha reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to the timely implementation of sanctioned projects and improving the overall performance of the power sector.
