Voltalia Commissions 148 MW Bolobedu Solar Farm In South Africa

International renewable energy company Voltalia has fully commissioned its 148 MW Bolobedu solar farm in Limpopo, South Africa. The project is one of the country’s largest corporate renewable energy projects designed to supply clean electricity to a single private customer.

The solar farm will supply electricity to Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), a major mineral sands mining company and a subsidiary of global mining group Rio Tinto. Under a long-term power purchase agreement, the facility is expected to generate around 300 GWh of electricity annually.

Power generated at the Bolobedu solar farm will be delivered to RBM’s operations through South Africa’s national electricity grid operated by Eskom. The project uses a wheeling arrangement, allowing renewable electricity generated in Limpopo to be supplied to the customer at its operational sites.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to emissions reduction in South Africa’s industrial sector. The clean electricity generated by the facility is estimated to avoid more than 237,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. This reduction is comparable to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 425,000 people.

Beyond clean energy generation, the Bolobedu project has also delivered economic and social benefits to communities in the surrounding area. During the construction phase, the project created employment opportunities for about 800 local residents. Women and young people were among those who participated significantly in the workforce.

The project also provided workers with practical experience in solar installation, engineering support and workplace safety. These skills are expected to strengthen local capabilities and support the development of South Africa’s renewable energy workforce.

Voltalia also worked with two local women investors as part of the project, creating an example of broader community participation in large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

The commissioning of Bolobedu comes as South Africa continues efforts to reduce its dependence on coal-fired power generation and increase renewable energy capacity. Large corporate renewable projects are playing an important role in helping industries secure cleaner electricity while reducing their carbon footprints.

For the mining sector, which has significant energy requirements, projects such as Bolobedu can support long-term decarbonisation efforts while providing access to renewable power through the country’s existing electricity transmission infrastructure.
