Iberdrola has taken another step in expanding its renewable energy presence in the United States with the successful grid connection of its new Tower Solar project in Morrow County, Oregon. Developed through the companyโs US subsidiary, Avangrid, the solar facility has now been connected to the regional electricity network and is expected to begin full commercial operations during the summer after the remaining stages of construction and testing are completed.
The Tower Solar plant has a generation capacity of 166 megawatts direct current (MWdc), equivalent to 120 megawatts alternating current (MWac). The project features more than 250,000 solar panels, making it a significant addition to Oregonโs renewable energy infrastructure. Once fully operational, the facility will supply clean electricity to the Portland General Electric (PGE) grid, helping meet the rising energy needs of businesses, industries, and communities across the region.
The project comes at a time when electricity demand in the United States continues to increase, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Growing industrial activity, technological development, and the rapid expansion of data centres are creating a greater need for reliable and sustainable energy sources. Renewable energy projects such as Tower Solar are playing an increasingly important role in meeting this demand while supporting the transition to a lower-carbon energy system.
A significant portion of the electricity generated by the facility will support large municipal, commercial, and industrial consumers. Among the beneficiaries will be operations associated with QTS (Quality Technology Services), one of the leading providers of digital infrastructure and data centre services in the United States. As demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services continues to grow, data centres require increasing amounts of electricity, creating opportunities for renewable energy providers to supply clean and reliable power.
The energy generated by Tower Solar will be delivered through Portland General Electricโs Green Future Impact (GFI) programme. This initiative allows large energy consumers to purchase electricity from new renewable energy projects and use it to support their sustainability and decarbonisation objectives. The programme is designed to encourage the development of additional renewable energy capacity while ensuring that the associated costs are borne by participating customers rather than being passed on to other electricity users.
By directly linking new renewable energy projects with customer demand, the Green Future Impact programme helps accelerate clean energy development and provides businesses with access to electricity that aligns with their environmental goals. This approach has become increasingly popular among large corporations seeking to reduce their carbon footprint while securing long-term access to renewable power.
The Tower Solar project also reflects Iberdrolaโs broader strategy of investing in energy solutions that balance affordability, energy security, and sustainability. The company believes that local renewable generation can play a key role in supporting economic growth, strengthening industrial development, and improving energy resilience in communities across the United States. In addition to delivering environmental benefits, projects such as Tower Solar contribute to regional economic development through construction activity, infrastructure investment, and long-term operational support.
As energy demand continues to rise, particularly from technology-focused industries, renewable energy facilities are expected to become increasingly important components of the country’s electricity supply mix.Through Avangrid, Iberdrola has established a significant presence in the United States renewable energy market.
The company currently operates more than 11,000 megawatts of installed generation capacity across nearly 100 facilities located in 25 states. Its portfolio includes a diverse range of renewable energy projects that support the countryโs transition toward cleaner and more sustainable sources of electricity.
The connection of Tower Solar to the grid marks another milestone in Iberdrolaโs efforts to expand renewable energy generation in North America. As the facility moves toward full commercial operation, it is expected to help meet growing electricity demand, support corporate sustainability initiatives, and contribute to the continued development of a more resilient and low-carbon energy system.
