The project involved the installation of 3,296 solar panels across approximately 6,000 square metres of roof space. The system is expected to generate around 1.25 million kWh of clean electricity annually, supplying a significant portion of the stadium’s energy requirements while reducing its dependence on grid power.

According to the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), the solar installation is capable of powering more than 50 major event days each year. During periods of high solar generation, the stadium can operate largely off-grid and export surplus electricity back to the national grid.

The initiative forms part of the stadium’s broader sustainability strategy aimed at reducing operational carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency. The solar array is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 220 tonnes annually while delivering substantial long-term energy cost savings.

WRU invested around ยฃ1 million in the project and anticipates annual savings of between ยฃ300,000 and ยฃ400,000 from reduced electricity costs. The organization expects the investment to achieve payback within a few years through lower energy expenditure and improved energy resilience.

The project highlights a growing trend among sports venues worldwide to integrate renewable energy technologies into their operations. As stadium operators seek to reduce environmental impact and enhance energy security, large-scale solar installations are increasingly becoming a key component of sustainability initiatives across the sports sector.

With the completion of the rooftop solar system, Principality Stadium has positioned itself as a leading example of how major sporting infrastructure can contribute to the energy transition while generating environmental and economic benefits.
