Sungrow Becomes First to Secure VDE FNN Certification for Grid-Forming Energy Storage PCS

Sungrow has become the first company globally to obtain the VDE FNN Prototype Certificate for an energy storage power conversion system (PCS), with its SC210HX series PCS successfully meeting Germany’s medium- and high-voltage grid connection standards alongside grid-forming performance requirements.

The certification, issued by TÜV Rheinland, marks a significant milestone for the company’s grid-forming energy storage technology and enables its PowerTitan energy storage systems equipped with the SC210HX PCS to accelerate grid connection approvals, reduce project acceptance risks, improve financing prospects, and facilitate access to Europe’s emerging inertia services market.

Developed by VDE FNN, the body responsible for Germany’s grid technology and operational standards, the certification framework establishes comprehensive requirements for medium- and high-voltage grid integration. It is widely recognized by European transmission operators, project developers, and financial institutions as a benchmark for evaluating the compliance, reliability, and grid-support capabilities of energy storage systems.

According to Sungrow, the SC210HX series PCS is powered by the company’s proprietary Stem-Cell Grid-Forming Technology, enabling energy storage systems to provide active and reactive power support for frequency regulation, voltage regulation, backup power, and other grid services. The system is also designed to support black start capability and islanded operation, while maintaining voltage-source characteristics and rapidly responding to grid disturbances in weak networks with high renewable energy penetration.

The company said the successful completion of the VDE FNN testing process demonstrates that the SC210HX series meets Germany’s stringent requirements for hardware reliability, proprietary control algorithms, and grid-forming performance, reinforcing Sungrow’s technological capabilities in advanced energy storage solutions.

Sungrow added that the certification is expected to deliver commercial benefits for developers by shortening grid connection timelines, minimizing commissioning delays, and enhancing project bankability as European grid standards become increasingly stringent. The certification also supports compliance with Europe’s latest requirements for inertia-based energy storage projects, strengthening investment and financing opportunities.

The company said it will continue expanding its portfolio of VDE-compliant grid-forming energy storage solutions to support Europe’s energy transition while delivering advanced grid-support technologies to customers worldwide.
