South Africa has taken an important step toward strengthening its electricity network with the signing of a strategic partnership between the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA). The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 31, 2026, at Eskom’s Megawatt Park offices in Johannesburg to accelerate the expansion and modernization of the country’s transmission infrastructure.
The agreement comes at a time when South Africa is working to improve its power system and support its long-term energy transition. A stronger transmission network is considered essential for connecting new electricity generation projects to the national grid and ensuring reliable power supply across the country. Expanding the grid is also expected to support economic growth by enabling greater access to electricity and encouraging investment in the energy sector.
Under the partnership, DBSA will contribute its expertise in infrastructure development, project preparation, and development finance. NTCSA, which is responsible for managing South Africa’s national transmission grid, will provide operational knowledge and technical leadership. Together, the two organizations will work on project preparation, infrastructure financing, institutional capacity building, and the implementation of major transmission projects.
One of the key priorities of the agreement is the development of regional transmission interconnectors. These cross-border links are expected to strengthen regional electricity trade, improve grid reliability, and help attract long-term investment. The initiative also supports the objectives of South Africa’s Transmission Development Plan, which aims to expand the country’s transmission capacity to meet rising electricity demand and integrate more renewable energy projects into the grid.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen engagement with multilateral development banks, development finance institutions, and private investors. By combining financial resources and technical expertise, the partners aim to mobilize funding for large-scale transmission infrastructure that will be critical for South Africa’s future energy needs.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, NTCSA Chief Executive Officer Monde Bala said that expanding the transmission grid is essential for unlocking new electricity generation capacity, improving energy security, and supporting inclusive economic growth. He added that the partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to achieving the country’s long-term energy goals.
DBSA Chief Executive Officer Boitumelo Mosako said the scale of South Africa’s grid expansion requires strong institutional partnerships and innovative financing solutions. She expressed confidence that the collaboration would help speed up the delivery of critical transmission infrastructure needed to meet future electricity demand.
The agreement marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s efforts to build a modern and resilient electricity network. By combining financial, technical, and operational expertise, the partnership is expected to strengthen energy security, support economic development, and advance the country’s transition toward a more sustainable power system.
