SMA Solar Technology AG (SMA) is expanding its Large Scale and Project Solutions business into the growing data center market with a new portfolio of power infrastructure solutions designed for AI and hyperscale data center applications.
The company said the solutions are built on its utility-scale power conversion technology and grid integration expertise, with a focus on helping data center developers accelerate time-to-power while maintaining reliable and scalable operations.
The expansion comes as demand for data center capacity continues to rise, driven by artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digitalisation. SMA said access to reliable electricity has become a critical factor in the development of new data centers, with lengthy grid interconnection processes and increasing grid stability requirements creating challenges for operators.
SMA plans to leverage its experience in power conversion, grid integration and energy management to address these challenges and expand into the data center customer segment.

He added that the company’s power conversion technologies, grid integration expertise and advanced controls can help customers address power-related bottlenecks and maximise energy availability for computing.
Three Data Center Power Solutions
SMA’s new portfolio comprises three solution architectures designed to address different grid and operational requirements.
SMA GridAssist is a battery-based architecture designed for grid-connected data centers. It supports load smoothing, power quality stabilisation and grid code compliance.
SMA GridLink AC is a medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (UPS) architecture designed to decouple data center loads from the grid and address grid interconnection challenges while supporting stable operations.
SMA GridLink DC is being developed for the transition toward 800V DC-powered AI infrastructure. Planned for deployment in 2027, the solution is designed to improve efficiency, scalability and power availability from the grid to computing infrastructure while reducing technology and execution risks.
SMA said the three architectures will allow data center developers and operators to select solutions based on their specific grid conditions, operational requirements and business objectives.
SMA Targets Data Center Revenue Growth
SMA brings approximately 45 years of experience in utility-scale energy systems to the data center market. Its capabilities include grid stabilisation, grid-forming technologies, battery energy storage integration, cybersecurity, power plant controls and complex electrical infrastructure management.
The company expects its data center business to generate revenue in the mid- to high-double-digit million-euro range in fiscal year 2027. SMA also expects the business to deliver further revenue growth in subsequent years as global electricity demand from data centers increases.
“AI data center developers and operators need more than individual components,” said Florian Bechtold, EVP, Large Scale and Project Solutions, SMA. He said the company aims to combine grid integration, power conversion, control, engineering and lifecycle support through scalable data center solutions.
SMA said its expansion into the data center sector represents a growth opportunity by applying its existing utility-scale technology platform and grid integration capabilities to the rapidly expanding AI-driven digital infrastructure market.
