Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive renewable energy project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, developed for Tata Steel Limited, marking an expansion of the companies’ efforts to support industrial decarbonisation.
The project is expected to generate approximately 166 million units (MUs) of green energy annually and offset around 118,856 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. It deploys 171,360 solar modules, manufactured by TP Solar Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Power.
The captive project is designed to support Tata Steel’s renewable energy requirements and reduce emissions associated with its operations. TPREL said the project combines large-scale solar generation with technology solutions to deliver clean energy for industrial consumption.
With the commissioning of the project, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 GW. Of this, approximately 7 GW is operational, comprising 5.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of wind capacity.
Another 5.3 GW of renewable capacity is currently under various stages of implementation, including approximately 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind projects. These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the next 6–24 months.
TPREL serves renewable energy requirements across sectors including data centres, communications, IT, petrochemicals, steel, automobiles, FMCG and biotechnology, in addition to utility-scale applications.
The company said the latest project demonstrates its engineering and execution capabilities in delivering large-scale renewable energy assets and supports its focus on industrial decarbonisation and clean energy infrastructure.
TPREL also remains focused on expanding its renewable energy portfolio in line with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030 and Tata Power’s broader clean energy objectives.
