PowerX and ITOCHU Secure Order for 75.2 MWh Grid-Scale BESS Project in Japan

PowerX, Inc., in collaboration with ITOCHU Corporation, has received an order for 30 units of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a combined storage capacity of 75.2 MWh for the Miyagi Shiroishi Battery Farm in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

The systems will be deployed at the Miyagi Shiroishi Battery Farm, an extra-high-voltage battery storage project located in Shiroishi City. The project is being developed by Miyagi Shiroishi Battery Farm LLC, which is funded by Tokyu Land Corporation and IBeeT Corporation. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin within fiscal year 2028.

The battery farm will connect to the Tohoku-area power grid to charge and discharge electricity, supporting power supply-demand balancing and facilitating the further integration of renewable energy in the region.

The project will deploy PowerX’s Mega Power 2500 BESS units through the co-branded “PowerX × Bluestorage” package jointly offered by PowerX and ITOCHU. Each system is housed in a 10-foot ISO-standard container and uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology, with a nominal capacity of 2,507 kWh per unit.

The 30 battery containers will provide a total storage capacity of 75.2 MWh and a power conversion system (PCS) output of 23 MW. According to the companies, the total storage capacity is equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of approximately 7,000 average Japanese households.

The project has been selected to receive a subsidy from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under the FY2025 Subsidy Program for Supporting the Introduction of Energy Storage Systems to Promote the Adoption of Renewable Energy.
