Iraq Plans 10 GW Solar Expansion To Tackle Power Shortages

Iraq is moving ahead with a major transformation of its electricity sector by expanding solar power to address long-standing electricity shortages and improve grid reliability. The country’s Ministry of Electricity has announced plans to develop up to 10 GW of solar power capacity as part of a wider strategy to modernize the national energy system and build a more reliable and sustainable electricity network.

Iraq has large oil reserves and receives strong levels of sunlight across much of its territory. However, the country continues to face frequent power shortages and blackouts. Electricity demand regularly exceeds available generation, particularly during the hot summer months when demand for cooling rises sharply. Aging infrastructure, previous damage to power facilities, administrative challenges and shortages of fuel and gas have contributed to the problem.

The government is now looking to use Iraq’s large desert areas and strong solar resources to diversify electricity generation. Several large-scale projects are being developed through agreements with international energy companies and private-sector partners.

One of the major projects is a planned 1,000 MW solar power plant by TotalEnergies in southern Iraq. The country has also entered into agreements with Masdar, the UAE-based renewable energy company, to support the development of large solar projects. Utility-scale solar facilities are already beginning to contribute to electricity generation, including projects in Karbala province.

Iraq’s solar strategy also includes smaller systems for households and businesses. The government is supporting residential and small-business solar installations through subsidized financing from the Central Bank of Iraq. These programs are intended to encourage consumers to install rooftop solar panels and battery storage, reducing dependence on local diesel generators.

Although financing, regulatory and administrative challenges remain, Iraq’s growing focus on solar power could significantly change its electricity sector. By expanding renewable generation alongside existing energy resources, the country aims to reduce power shortages, strengthen energy security and move toward a more sustainable electricity system.
