Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has emerged as the successful bidder for a major inter-state transmission project to evacuate 6,000 MW of renewable power from Rajasthan’s Barmer renewable energy zone.
The project has been awarded under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. POWERGRID will build, own, operate and transfer the transmission system. The company quoted annual transmission charges of ₹3,244.33 crore for the project. The Letter of Intent (LoI) was formally issued on September 2, 2026.
The transmission scheme will include 6,000 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) terminal stations operating at ±800 kV. These terminals will be developed at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and the South Kalamb substation in Maharashtra. The existing transmission capacity at South Kalamb will also be augmented as part of the project.
A major component of the scheme is a ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line of approximately 1,000 km. The line will pass through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, creating a long-distance corridor for transferring renewable power from western India to demand centres.
The project will also include the construction of 400 kV transmission lines and associated bays in Rajasthan. To improve grid stability and maintain power quality, two synchronous condenser units, along with their associated bays, will be installed at the Barmer-II power station.
The transmission infrastructure is expected to strengthen the country’s inter-state power transfer capability and support the integration of large-scale renewable energy into the national grid.
The project will enable electricity generated from the Barmer solar complex to be transmitted over long distances across state boundaries. It is also expected to support India’s broader renewable energy expansion by providing the transmission infrastructure needed to connect large renewable energy projects with major consumption centres.
