WeWork India Plans 10 MWp Solar Plant in Karnataka to Raise Renewable Power Share

WeWork India Management Limited has announced plans to develop a 10 MWp (DC) ground-mounted solar power plant in Karnataka as part of its efforts to increase the use of renewable electricity across its operations and achieve its target of 100% renewable electricity by March 2028.

The solar plant is targeted for commissioning in FY2027 and is expected to generate approximately 15–16 million units of clean electricity annually. Once operational, the project is expected to increase the share of renewable electricity across WeWork India’s portfolio from nearly 40% currently to around 50%.

Nearly 80% of the plant’s generation is expected to support WeWork India’s operations, including its centres in Bengaluru, while the remaining 20% will be allocated for future growth. The company currently operates 30 centres in Bengaluru, making the city its largest market.

Karnataka has been identified as a strategic location for the investment, accounting for approximately 30% of WeWork India’s total electricity consumption across its portfolio. The solar project is expected to meet a portion of this demand through renewable generation while reducing dependence on conventional grid electricity.

The project will have a 25-year design life, providing the company with greater long-term visibility over electricity costs. WeWork India expects the facility to help reduce exposure to fluctuations in grid tariffs while improving operating efficiencies through renewable power generation.

The company plans to combine owned renewable generation, captive consumption and open-access power procurement as part of a diversified energy sourcing strategy. The approach is intended to support both lower-carbon operations and greater cost certainty over the long term.

Karan Virwani, Managing Director and CEO of WeWork India, said Bengaluru was the natural starting point for an investment of this scale given the company’s presence in the market. He added that the initiative is intended to reduce the carbon footprint of operations while providing greater certainty over energy costs over the asset’s life.

The solar plant forms part of WeWork India’s broader sustainability strategy and marks a shift from primarily procuring renewable electricity towards direct investment in renewable energy generation capacity. The company expects the project to support its continued portfolio expansion while building a more resilient and lower-carbon energy model.
