POWERGRID Awards 6,000 MW HVDC Project To GE Vernova T&D India For Renewable Power Transmission

GE Vernova T&D India Limited has emerged as the lowest bidder for a major power transmission project awarded by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID). The project is aimed at strengthening India’s transmission infrastructure and supporting the evacuation and integration of renewable energy into the national power grid.

Under the project, GE Vernova T&D India will be responsible for the design, supply, and establishment of a 6,000 megawatt (MW), ±800 kilovolt (kV) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Line Commutated Converter terminal station. The proposed facility will comprise two units, each with a capacity of 3,000 MW.

The HVDC terminal station will be developed to facilitate the evacuation of renewable power from the Barmer II region in Rajasthan to South Kalamb. The transmission infrastructure is expected to play an important role in moving large volumes of clean electricity over long distances while supporting the wider integration of renewable energy into the country’s electricity network.

The project covers the complete scope of work, beginning with the initial design and supply of equipment and extending through the establishment and operational setup of the terminal station. Its execution is expected to take place over multiple years, reflecting the scale and complexity of the high-voltage transmission infrastructure involved.

The contract is a domestic project and forms part of India’s broader efforts to expand its power transmission network and improve renewable energy connectivity.

GE Vernova T&D India has also clarified that there is no interest of its promoters, promoter group, or group companies in the awarding entity. The transaction does not qualify as a related party transaction and will be undertaken on an arm’s length basis.

The project further strengthens GE Vernova T&D India’s position in India’s high-capacity transmission sector and highlights the growing importance of advanced grid infrastructure in enabling large-scale renewable energy development.
