Trina Storage and AMP-lify Sign MoU for 1 GWh of Grid-Connected BESS Projects in Japan

Trina Storage, the energy storage business unit of Trinasolar, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese clean energy platform AMP-lify to supply approximately 1 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) equipment for grid-connected projects in Japan.

Under the agreement, Trina Storage will supply its Elementa 3 series BESS and provide technical support for AMP-lify’s planned storage projects. AMP-lify develops, constructs and operates grid-connected BESS, utility-scale solar and onshore wind projects across Japan.

Trina Storage’s Japan team will support system configuration, technical consultation, delivery coordination and after-sales services as part of the collaboration.

The Elementa 3 platform uses Trina Storage’s in-house 587 Ah high-capacity battery cell and can provide up to 6.25 MWh per container, targeting larger utility-scale energy storage applications.

For sites with transport, land or community-related constraints, Trina Storage also offers the 1.56 MWh Elementa 3 Flex configuration. The system has a footprint of approximately five square metres, weighs around 13 tonnes for standard-truck transportation and has operating noise levels of 65 dB or less. The modular design allows capacity to be expanded according to project requirements.

The partnership comes as Japan expands its focus on energy storage to support the integration of variable renewable generation. Japan’s Seventh Strategic Energy Plan projects renewables to account for approximately 40–50% of electricity generation by fiscal 2040, while identifying battery storage as an important technology for balancing renewable power output.

AMP-lify Representative Director and CEO Martin Stein said the partnership would support the development of technically sound and locally executable storage projects, from site evaluation through construction and operation.

Dr Leo Zhao, Head of Energy Storage, Trinasolar Asia Pacific, said Japan’s storage projects require consideration of factors including road weight restrictions, narrow site access, mountainous terrain, limited land availability, community noise expectations, seismic conditions and coastal environments.

The companies said the MoU will combine AMP-lify’s local project execution capabilities with Trina Storage’s Elementa 3 portfolio and Japan-based technical support to configure BESS projects according to individual site requirements.
