IEA Chief Fatih Birol Meets South Korea President To Discuss Energy Security And Clean Power Strategy

The Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Seoul to discuss global energy market developments, recent supply disruptions and Korea’s long-term energy strategy.

The meeting was held at the Blue House and focused on the impact of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East on international energy markets. Birol and President Lee discussed the need to strengthen energy security and manage risks arising from disruptions to global energy supply chains.

During the meeting, President Lee highlighted Korea’s efforts to make clean electricity a central part of the country’s energy strategy. The discussions covered the roles of renewable energy and nuclear power in developing a reliable and secure electricity system. Both sides also examined opportunities for Korea and the IEA to work together on energy security and sustainability across Asia.

President Lee expressed appreciation for the IEA’s contribution to international efforts to address energy market disruptions. The discussions also underlined the importance of cooperation between countries as governments respond to changing energy markets and growing energy security concerns.

As part of his visit to Seoul, Birol met with Korea’s Minister for Climate, Energy, and Environment, Kim Sung-hwan. The two officials launched the RISE ASIA initiative during a joint press conference. The initiative is intended to strengthen cooperation between Korea and the IEA and support greater energy security, affordability and sustainability across the Asian region.

Birol also participated in events marking important milestones for Korea’s energy sector. He delivered a keynote address at celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI). During the event, he met KEEI President Hyun Jae-kim and discussed international energy trends as well as the institutions’ long-standing cooperation in energy analysis and research.

The IEA chief later traveled to Busan, where he addressed around 1,000 participants at an international energy conference. His address focused on the changing global energy environment and how countries are reassessing their energy strategies amid the current energy crisis.

Birol emphasized the importance of technology and innovation in responding to these challenges. According to the IEA, advances in energy technologies can help countries strengthen resilience, support economic development and accelerate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The meetings and engagements during Birol’s visit highlight the growing importance of international cooperation in addressing energy security and sustainability. For Korea, the discussions also reflect its efforts to balance clean electricity, renewable energy and nuclear power while responding to changes in global energy markets.
