OMV Petrom Signs EPC Contract for 20 MW/40 MWh Battery Storage Project in Romania

OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in South-East Europe, has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with Romanian company Simtel Team for a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Ișalnița solar farm in Dolj County, Romania.

The Ișalnița project is OMV Petrom’s first large-scale solar project wholly owned by the company. Construction of the battery storage facility is expected to be completed within approximately seven months from the signing of the contract.

The BESS will have an installed power capacity of 20 MW and a storage capacity of 40 MWh. It is designed to store electricity generated during periods of high renewable energy production and release it when electricity demand is higher.

The company said the storage system will support greater flexibility in electricity supply, improve the integration of renewable generation, and contribute to grid stability and more efficient use of renewable energy.

Construction is currently underway at the Ișalnița photovoltaic park, which is planned to have an installed capacity of approximately 89 MWp and is expected to generate around 130 GWh of renewable electricity annually.

OMV Petrom is expanding its electricity portfolio through conventional generation, renewable energy and energy storage. Its portfolio includes the 860 MW Brazi power plant, more than 1,200 MW of renewable capacity under construction in collaboration with partners, and energy storage projects in Romania and Bulgaria.

In Bulgaria, OMV Petrom is developing the Gabare energy storage project, which is expected to provide approximately 600 MWh of storage capacity.
