Sungrow Commissions 10 MW/40 MWh Battery Energy Storage Project in Sri Lanka to Strengthen Grid Flexibility

Sungrow, a global supplier of photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems, has announced the successful commissioning and commencement of commercial operations of a 10 MW/40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developed by WKV Hydro Technics (Pvt) Ltd in Galle, Sri Lanka. The project began commercial operations on September 10, 2026, and uses Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage solution to improve grid stability, support peak demand management, and facilitate renewable energy integration.

The project was developed by WKV Group, a subsidiary of Khen Energy Limited, and represents a significant addition to Sri Lanka’s growing energy storage infrastructure. The facility is designed to provide fast-response energy storage capacity, enabling the electricity grid to manage fluctuations in renewable energy generation and electricity demand more effectively.

Sri Lanka is working toward achieving 70% of its electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2030, with solar and wind power expected to play major roles in the country’s energy transition. As renewable energy capacity expands, the need for flexible grid-support technologies has become increasingly important. The country’s electricity demand typically peaks around 7 p.m., creating additional requirements for energy storage systems capable of supplying electricity during high-demand periods.

The newly commissioned BESS is expected to strengthen grid flexibility by providing peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capabilities. The system can store electricity during periods of available supply and discharge it when required, helping improve electricity supply reliability and support the integration of variable renewable energy sources.

The facility incorporates Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 technology, which combines battery storage and power conversion systems (PCS) within an integrated AC-DC block. The solution features intelligent battery management and station-level control systems that continuously monitor battery performance and optimize operations to support long-term reliability.

According to Sungrow, the system’s pre-assembled design simplifies installation and commissioning processes, contributing to a 50% reduction in grid-connection time. The technology is also designed to operate in challenging environmental conditions, an important consideration for the Galle project, which is located approximately 500 meters from the coastline.

The coastal location exposes the facility to high temperatures, humidity, and corrosive conditions. Sungrow stated that PowerTitan 2.0 is engineered to withstand such environments and is designed for an operational lifespan of at least 15 years.

The project also demonstrated an accelerated commissioning schedule through coordination between Sungrow and WKV Group. Thermal commissioning and pre-Site Acceptance Testing (pre-SAT) activities were completed within one week, followed by formal Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and the commencement of commercial operations within five days.

The accelerated delivery was supported by advance technical preparations, including system parameter configuration, auxiliary power arrangements, liquid-cooling inspections, and grid-connection planning. Sungrow’s technical and project delivery teams also provided on-site assistance throughout testing and commissioning.

Commenting on the development, Sudath Pathmal, Chief Operating Officer of WKV Group, described the project as a technological milestone and a national achievement. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in strengthening Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure and advancing its sustainability objectives.

The commissioning of the 10 MW/40 MWh BESS highlights the growing role of utility-scale battery storage in supporting Sri Lanka’s renewable energy transition. With four hours of storage capacity at its rated output, the project is positioned to contribute to improved grid reliability, enhanced operational flexibility, and more effective utilization of renewable electricity.

The development also strengthens Sungrow’s presence in the energy storage sector, demonstrating the application of its integrated battery technology in coastal environments and emerging renewable energy markets.
