ACWA And Mongolia’s Sun Steppe Power Explore 4.5 GW Renewable Energy Export Project To China

ACWA has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Mongolia-based Sun Steppe Power to explore opportunities for exporting renewable electricity from Mongolia to China through cross-border energy infrastructure. The agreement was signed in Riyadh on the sidelines of the 25th WPC Energy Congress, which is being hosted by Saudi Arabia until October 15 as part of Energy Week.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, and ACWA Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan. The cooperation marks a step towards examining opportunities for large-scale renewable energy development in Mongolia and supplying electricity to international markets.

Under the memorandum, ACWA and Sun Steppe Power will assess the potential development of renewable power generation projects in Mongolia, with a focus on exporting electricity to China. The proposed cooperation will also cover utility-scale battery energy storage systems to support solar and wind power generation and improve the management of renewable electricity supplies.

The agreement further includes exploring the transmission and export infrastructure required to deliver electricity to China or other markets mutually agreed upon by the two companies. Developing suitable transmission networks will be an important component of enabling cross-border renewable energy trade.

The memorandum provides a framework for assessing a potential cross-border renewable energy project with a targeted generation capacity of 4.5 gigawatts (GW), supported by a 500 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system.

The proposed project could support Mongolia’s renewable energy development while creating opportunities to supply clean electricity to neighbouring markets. However, the memorandum focuses on exploring the project’s feasibility and development opportunities, with further assessments needed to determine its implementation.

The cooperation reflects growing interest in international renewable energy partnerships, combining large-scale generation, energy storage and cross-border transmission infrastructure to expand access to clean electricity.
