Solarcentury Africa and Alensy Energy Solutions Secure EPC Contract for 56 MWp Kafue Solar Project in Zambia

Solarcentury Africa, in partnership with Alensy Energy Solutions, has been appointed as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the 56 MWp Kafue Solar Project in Zambia’s Lusaka Province. The project, developed by independent power producer Globeleq, has achieved financial close, with construction scheduled to commence immediately.

Solarcentury Africa also served as the technical development partner to Globeleq during the project’s development phase and will now collaborate with Alensy Energy Solutions to execute the EPC scope.

The Kafue Solar Project was awarded under the GET FiT Zambia Programme, an initiative supporting private-sector investment in renewable energy generation. Once operational, the facility will supply electricity to Zambia’s national grid under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with ZESCO, the country’s state-owned electricity utility.

The project has secured financing from FMO, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, and British International Investment (BII). Additionally, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) is supporting essential grid infrastructure upgrades associated with the development.

The 56 MWp solar facility is expected to generate sufficient clean electricity to serve approximately 38,000 households, while avoiding an estimated 48,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The project is also expected to contribute to Zambia’s energy security by strengthening electricity supply and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the national grid.

During peak construction, the development is anticipated to create approximately 200 employment opportunities for local Zambians, alongside additional long-term operational positions following commissioning.

Jason de Carteret, Chief Executive Officer of Solarcentury Africa, welcomed the project’s financial close and highlighted the company’s involvement as both a development partner and EPC contractor. He emphasised the importance of working closely with Globeleq and Alensy Energy Solutions to deliver the project safely, efficiently, and within the planned schedule.

Norbert Dörgeloh, Chief Executive Officer of Alensy Energy Solutions, described the partnership with Globeleq as an important milestone for the company. He noted that the Kafue Solar Project would represent Alensy’s third large-scale utility-scale project in Zambia, further strengthening its renewable energy construction portfolio.

Jonathan Hoffman, Chief Executive Officer of Globeleq, highlighted the role of public-private collaboration in advancing Zambia’s energy and economic development objectives. He stated that the project would help strengthen electricity infrastructure in a key industrial region, improve power reliability for businesses and communities, and support the country’s transition towards a lower-carbon energy system.

Electricity generation from the Kafue Solar Project is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027, following the completion of construction and associated grid infrastructure works.

The development represents another significant investment in Zambia’s renewable energy sector and reinforces Solarcentury Africa’s growing presence in the development and delivery of utility-scale solar projects across the African continent.
