India’s New and Renewable Energy Minister Will Urge Nations To Reduce Carbon Emissions at Upcoming COP26 Summit

New and renewable energy minister R K Singh said that he will urge nations to reduce their carbon emissions at the upcoming 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) at Glasgow, United Kingdom scheduled in November this year. The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference is scheduled to be held from 1-12 November, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland under the presidency of the United Kingdom and in partnership with Italy.

“We will be the only country at the COP26 Glasgow Summit that will go with confidence as we have met our Paris Agreement target of reducing emissions, no other country has been able to do it,” said Singh at an Bureau of Energy Efficiency event. He said that the issue of global warming cannot be dealt with until and unless other countries reduce their emissions.

Even though India has achieved its Paris Agreement target of changing its energy mix and making it clean, the issue of global warming cannot be dealt with until and unless other countries reduce their emissions as well. Several agencies have noted that among large economies, India is the only country which is on the right trajectory to limit global temperature rise to 2 degree Celsius he added.

At present, India has reached 38 per cent renewable in the energy mix and according to the power minister, plans to increase it to 60-65 per cent by 2030.

India had set a target of 40 per cent electricity generation from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, as well as a reduction in its economy’s carbon intensity of 33-35 per cent by 2030 under the Paris Climate Agreement.
