SailGP, the most thrilling racing on water in the world, will make the biggest use of solar energy in its history.

SailGP and Aggreko have partnered to ensure that the Championship is powered by sustainable event operations. This partnership allows for nearly 4800L in fossil fuel savings.

Aggreko’s sustainable power solution for the event comprises two 75 kWp Solar Gem Units, supplying around 10 MWh of energy to the technical site.

Martin Nichol, Head of Events at Aggreko Mena, states, “We will use a hybrid energy solution that combines solar power, biofuel, and battery storage to make the Dubai Sail Grand Prix an important sustainable event. This is in line with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy, which aims to reduce its carbon footprint. Our solar gem will be the center of sustainable clean energy innovations at the event. It will supply power directly to the load, and our biofuel generators will synchronize with it to take up any remaining load.

“By using sustainable options such as solar energy or biofuel, we help the event significantly reduce CO2 emissions. We hope to influence sustainability-conscious choices throughout the sailing industry and sporting events globally, through our partnership with SailGP.”

Aggreko will supply two 90kVA power battery packs and five gensets to power the race village and technical site. Two gensets will be used to power the event’s kitchen, while one genset will be used by the broadcast station for B100 fuel.

Fiona Morgan, SailGP Global Director for Purpose & Impact, stated that Aggreko is a great partner to help us achieve our goal of being 100% powered by clean energy by 2025. The partnership has already supported many sustainability-conscious innovations throughout the season, and we’re excited to be using the largest solar power array we’ve ever operated as a key source of energy for our inaugural Dubai event.”

Dubai Sail Grand Prix was held in partnership with P&O Marinas and Dubai Sports Council.
