Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has been awarded a Letter of Award (LOA) to develop a large-scale 966MW Round-the-clock (RTC) hybrid renewable power project for Tata Steel. This project stands as one of the most significant industrial RTC power Purchase Power Agreements (PPAs) in the Group Captive segment within the country. The project will combine the capacities of solar and wind energy, with 379MW allocated to solar power and 587MW to wind power.
Tata Steel, known for its diversified steel production worldwide and an annual crude steel capacity of 35 million tonnes per annum (MnTPA), will benefit significantly from this initiative. By meeting a substantial portion of Tata Steel’s energy requirements through renewable sources, the project is projected to save an estimated 2,389,160 tons of CO2 emissions annually, contributing significantly to reducing the company’s carbon footprint.
Under the arrangement, Tata Steel will invest 26% of the equity in the project, which is scheduled to be commissioned by June 1, 2025. Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, expressed the commitment of Tata Power and Tata Steel to collaboratively develop sustainable energy solutions. The 966MW RTC hybrid renewable power project represents a significant stride in their joint efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean energy, aligning with the net-zero target.
Mr. T. V. Narendran, CEO & MD of Tata Steel, also emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that it allows Tata Steel to secure a considerable portion of its power requirements from renewable sources. This collaboration reinforces their sustainability vision and will aid in reducing the carbon emissions associated with their operations. By taking steps towards achieving their net-zero target by 2045, Tata Steel and Tata Power recognize the pivotal role of renewable energy in shaping the future.
This latest accomplishment brings the total renewable capacity of TPREL to 7,756MW, with an installed capacity of 4,059MW in solar (3,107MW) and wind (952MW). Additionally, TPREL has 3,697MW of renewable projects in various stages of implementation, further solidifying its position in the renewable energy sector.
