In a significant move towards enhancing bilateral ties, Malta and Egypt have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on fostering cooperation in the fields of energy and electricity. The agreement, signed in Valletta, saw Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, and Mohamed Hamed Shaker El-Markabi, Minister for Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, representing their respective nations.
The MoU outlines key areas of collaboration, aiming to intensify the exchange of knowledge and expertise in energy sources and electricity generation, with a specific emphasis on diversification and security of supply.
Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted the shared commitment to exploring renewable energy systems, and emerging technologies, and advancing research and innovation within the energy and electricity sectors. The agreement underscores the joint efforts of both countries to support public and private sectors in implementing energy efficiency initiatives.
One notable aspect of potential collaboration is the exploration of indirect electrical interconnection, aligning with the European Commission’s encouragement for EU member states to collaborate in achieving higher national renewable energy targets. Malta and Egypt are also considering the development of virtual energy corridors to contribute to diversifying energy sources toward renewables.
Minister Dalli emphasized that this collaboration is happening at a crucial juncture in the rapidly transforming energy sector, presenting significant opportunities for the Mediterranean region. She highlighted the potential of such cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. Malta has been actively promoting the concept of the Mediterranean as a green energy hub among the nine EU Mediterranean states, with aspirations to extend the initiative to other Mediterranean countries.
The MoU additionally includes provisions for the exchange of technical expertise through educational initiatives, training programs, and information sharing. The collaborative effort extends to capacity building in green hydrogen projects and the electricity market.
This agreement sets the stage for strengthened ties between Malta and Egypt, opening avenues for joint initiatives that contribute to sustainable and innovative solutions in the energy and electricity domains.
