Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is charting an ambitious course towards sustainability, unveiling a well-thought-out roadmap that encompasses environmental practices, clean energy initiatives, and digital transformation. The initiative underscores DEWA’s commitment to supporting the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Clean and Sustainable Energy:

DEWA’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy sources is evident in its continuous development and expansion of production capacity. In 2023, DEWA recorded a 6.3% annual increase in power demand, reaching 56.5 TWh. Notably, 6.2 TWh of clean power, representing a 32.7% increase, was generated, accounting for 11% of total power generated. DEWA’s total capacity now stands at 16,270MW of electricity and 495 million imperial gallons per day of desalinated water, including 2,627MW from renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. DEWA’s efforts resulted in a reduction of 9.1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2023.

Sustainable Projects:

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, is a cornerstone of DEWA’s sustainable projects. With a planned production capacity of 5,000W by 2030 and total investments of AED 50 billion, the solar park has reached a current production capacity of 2,627MW. DEWA’s innovative projects include the Green Hydrogen project, the first of its kind in the MENA region, producing hydrogen using solar power.

Additionally, DEWA is constructing a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, the first of its kind in the GCC, with a capacity of 250MW, storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours, and a lifespan of 80 years.

Digital Transformation:

DEWA’s digital transformation strategy aims to define its digital aspirations and prepare a roadmap for effective and value-added digital transformation across all divisions. With smart services adoption reaching 99.62% by the end of 2023, DEWA’s customers conducted over 12.5 million digital transactions. Initiatives like Rammas, a customer service robot, and the Smart Document system contribute to enhancing digital services.

Environmental Stewardship:

DEWA actively engages in volunteering campaigns to preserve the environment, organizing beach clean-ups and mangrove planting initiatives. The company has been preparing annual sustainability reports since 2013, aligning with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and UN SDGs.

International Recognition:

DEWA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability has garnered international acclaim, with the organization receiving the Hydrogen Project of the Year 2023 Award for its green hydrogen project.

DEWA’s strategic roadmap reflects a holistic approach to sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility, positioning the organization at the forefront of global efforts to create a cleaner and more sustainable future.
