Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL) has announced the launch of two major solar-plus-energy storage projects aimed at supplying assured renewable power to the state during both daytime and peak demand hours. The projects have contracted capacities of 50 MW and 200 MW and are designed to provide reliable electricity for four-hour and six-hour peak periods, respectively, along with daytime solar supply. The projects have been structured in a way that the same level of electricity will be supplied during both solar generation hours and peak demand periods, ensuring optimal utilization of transmission infrastructure.
According to the announcement, the projects are among the first truly technology-agnostic renewable energy storage tenders in India. Developers will have the flexibility to use battery energy storage systems, pumped storage projects (PSP), or any other storage technology for meeting the project requirements. The initiative was reportedly guided by Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary Anurag Jain, who emphasized the need for a technology-neutral framework from the early stages of planning.
Under the project structure, battery storage systems can be co-located with solar plants as part of a composite renewable energy project. However, since pumped storage projects can only be developed at suitable geographical locations, developers have been given the flexibility to locate project components either inside or outside the designated Solar Park area. For projects developed within the park, land, and evacuation infrastructure connected to the State Transmission Utility (STU) will be provided by RUMSL. Developers opting for projects outside the Solar Park will have to arrange land and evacuation facilities independently at their own expense.
The tender also provides provisions for Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected projects. In such cases, transmission charges and losses will be included in the bidding calculations to ensure fair comparison of tariffs based on the landed cost at the state grid boundary.
The new projects build upon the stateโs earlier renewable energy initiatives, including the Morena Solar-with-Storage Project and the well-known Rewa and Agar Shajapur Neemuch (ASN) solar projects, which had achieved record-low tariffs in the past.
RUMSL stated that the projects are expected to avoid nearly 2 crore tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered equivalent to planting around 34 crore mature trees. The company added that the projects will also support future plans for round-the-clock renewable power supply solutions. A pre-bid meeting for both projects is scheduled to be held on May 29, 2026, at MP Bhawan in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.
