Sembcorp Industries has made significant strides in the renewable energy sector with its subsidiary, Green Infra Wind Energy Limited (GIWEL), securing a major project. The company announced it has been awarded a 440MW wind-solar hybrid power project by SJVN Limited. This project is a part of SJVN’s 1.5GW tender from September 2023, emphasizing the shift towards renewable energy solutions.
Upon successful completion of a power purchase agreement (PPA), Sembcorp will build, own, and operate this expansive project, aiming for commercial operation within 24 months from the PPA signing. The 25-year PPA ensures a long-term commitment to supplying power generated from this project to SJVN, highlighting the project’s significance in bolstering renewable energy capacity in the region.
This development is part of Sembcorp’s broader strategy, unveiled during its Investor Day in November 2023, to enhance its green energy footprint in India. With this new project, Sembcorp has announced over 1.4GW of new greenfield and brownfield projects in the country, bringing its global renewables capacity to 14.3GW, including a pending 245MW acquisition.
Sembcorp’s latest venture into renewable energy is not expected to significantly impact its financial performance for the year ending December 31, 2024. However, it marks a crucial step in the company’s ongoing efforts to expand its renewable energy portfolio and contribute to the global transition towards more sustainable energy sources.
