Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a forefront player in coordinating the planning, procurement, and distribution of water and electricity across the UAE, has declared the opening of registration for its Q1 2024 auction for Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) in Abu Dhabi. The highly anticipated auction is scheduled to take place on March 14, 2024.

Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) play a pivotal role in allowing Abu Dhabi entities to officially certify their clean energy consumption. This process enables them to monitor and validate their progress towards achieving environmental goals. The demand for CECs witnessed a substantial surge in 2023, marked by the single-largest purchase of CECs to date and a record number of participants. Recently, EWEC provided CECs to the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), which made history as the first time the event was held in the Middle East.

Othman Al Ali, the Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, emphasized the significance of sustainability under the UAE’s leadership, declaring 2024 as the extended Year of Sustainability. He highlighted sustainability as a core value at EWEC and stressed that strategic initiatives directly align with the UAE’s clean energy transition objectives.

The innovative CECs scheme, introduced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), stands as the sole accredited instrument validating the ownership of environmental and economic benefits derived from consuming clean energy in Abu Dhabi. Issued in 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) units, each CEC serves as a testament that the electricity consumed by an entity originates from a clean energy source. EWEC, acting as the Single Registrant and Auction Operator, plays a key role in facilitating the implementation of the CECs scheme.

The CECs scheme adheres to the internationally recognized standard developed by the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard), bolstering an organization’s sustainability credentials and contributing to the UAE’s net-zero goal. The forthcoming auction reflects EWEC’s commitment to driving decarbonization in the UAE, empowering organizations to reduce their carbon footprint and actively participate in the nation’s sustainability journey.
