The Environmental Assessment Commission of the Coquimbo region in Chile has granted approval for the Chirihue solar project, marking a significant step forward in renewable energy development in the area. With a planned installed capacity of 24 MW, the project is set to be located within the commune of Coquimbo.

According to statements from the Ministry of Energy, the project entails an estimated investment of $66 million and will encompass the installation of approximately 37 thousand photovoltaic panels along with six battery units. This infrastructure will enable the injection of 9 MW of energy into the National Electrical System (SEN) both day and night, facilitated by a medium-voltage evacuation line of 15 kV.

The Chirihue solar project is slated to occupy an area of 20 hectares in the Las Barrancas sector and is projected to generate around 50 GWh/year of electricity. Furthermore, during its construction phase, the project anticipates creating up to 40 job opportunities.

This initiative adds to a growing portfolio of renewable energy ventures in the Coquimbo region. Since 2022, a total of seven electricity generation projects have been approved, collectively amounting to 661 MW of future installed capacity and an investment of $748 million.

The approval of the Chirihue solar project underscores Chile’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels. With continued investment and development in the renewable energy sector, the Coquimbo region is poised to play a key role in Chile’s transition towards a greener and more resilient energy landscape.
