Global Energy Alliance Appoints Woochong Um as New CEO

The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) has announced the appointment of Mr. Woochong Um as its new Chief Executive Officer. Um, previously associated with the Asian Development Bank, will lead GEAPP in its mission to combat energy poverty and address the climate crisis through a transition to renewable energy.

Established in 2021, GEAPP aims to foster a just transition to renewable energy, particularly in regions like Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Um’s appointment signifies GEAPP’s dedication to driving change and unlocking green energy opportunities worldwide.

In a statement, Um emphasized the importance of collective action in achieving a just energy transition, highlighting the urgency of addressing the climate crisis. He expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with stakeholders from diverse sectors to advance GEAPP’s mission.

Ravi Venkatesan, Chair of the GEAPP Board, hailed Um’s appointment as a significant milestone for the alliance. He praised Um’s experience and vision, foreseeing a bright future under his leadership.

Saurabh Kumar, Vice-President of GEAPP in India, welcomed Um’s appointment, citing his expertise in sustainability and climate action. Kumar expressed confidence in Um’s ability to drive the organization towards its goal of affordable clean energy for all.

Um’s appointment follows a thorough selection process and marks a new phase for GEAPP, which has already made significant strides since its inception at COP26 in 2021. Um will succeed interim CEO Joseph Ng’ang’a, who has led GEAPP’s efforts in scaling renewable energy solutions across regions. Um’s tenure is expected to further GEAPP’s pioneering work in scaling new solutions and facilitating access to an inclusive and resilient future.

With over three decades of experience, Um brings a wealth of expertise from his tenure at the Asian Development Bank, where he championed sustainability and renewable energy initiatives across diverse sectors.
