Malaysia’s energy giants, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and PETRONAS, have enlisted Black & Veatch for this study.

“Securing dependable purchasers for green hydrogen is essential to ensure the economic feasibility of hydrogen initiatives. Given Malaysia’s abundant renewable resources like solar and hydropower, this feasibility study could shape the emergence of a hydrogen-based economy in Malaysia in the coming decade,” said Jerin Raj, Director for South & Southeast Asia and Taiwan at Black & Veatch.

Raj added, “Black & Veatch has a long history in hydrogen and ammonia production, dating back over 80 years.” Raj also emphasized our company’s track record of innovation and leadership in the hydrogen sector, spanning from spearheading the inaugural hydrogen power generation conversion project to establishing the primary hydrogen fueling station in the United States.

The primary objectives of Black & Veatch’s feasibility study are to confirm the findings of a prior joint study by TNB and PETRONAS on hydrogen development in Malaysia and to offer strategic, technical, and commercial insights into the generation, transportation, distribution, and demand for green hydrogen.

This joint endeavor highlights the dedication of the partners to bolster Malaysia’s aspiration for a flourishing green hydrogen economy.

To guide the development of its hydrogen economy, Malaysia has formulated the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). The country aims to become a significant hydrogen exporter in the Asia Pacific region by 2050, with projected revenues exceeding RM400 billion (USD 85 billion).

Black & Veatch is addressing the rapidly growing energy demands of the Asia Pacific region with low and zero-carbon energy sources, including green hydrogen. The company brings extensive engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) experience across the green hydrogen value chain, along with technical expertise and business and regulatory knowledge spanning power, transportation, and bunkering sectors.
