The progress of the solar power plant project in 25 rural towns, undertaken by the Ethiopian Electricity Utility, has reached 61 percent completion.
The Ethiopian Electric Utility initiated a solar mini grid project aimed at providing electricity to 25 rural towns.
Implemented by three contractors across six lots in rural areas selected from seven regions, the project involves installing 68.7 km of medium-voltage and 233.3 km of low-voltage lines, generating a total of 8 MW of electric power.
Expected to create numerous job opportunities, the project will grant electric access to over 145,000 new customers and facilitate knowledge transfer during its implementation.
With a combined cost exceeding $20 million, covered by the African Development Bank and the Ethiopian government, the project is being executed by two Chinese and one Korean companies.
By 2030, the Ethiopian Electric Utility seeks to attain 65 percent of electricity access from the primary grid and 35 percent from alternative sources.
