In a significant move to bolster Egypt’s economic resilience and sustainability, the World Bank has approved US$700 million in Development Policy Financing (DPF) aimed at supporting the country’s strategic shift towards private sector engagement, fiscal stability, and environmental sustainability.
Dubbed as the “Generating Resilience, Opportunities, And Welfare for a Thriving Egypt” DPF, this initiative is set to address immediate economic challenges while laying the groundwork for transformative structural reforms. These reforms include promoting a more competitive business environment, fortifying macroeconomic frameworks, and accelerating Egypt’s transition to a green economy by scaling up renewable energy initiatives and improving efficiency in vital sectors such as electricity, water, and sanitation.
H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation and Governor at the World Bank, emphasized the critical role of these funds in advancing Egypt’s national priorities. She highlighted, “Through this partnership with the World Bank, Egypt aims to strengthen fiscal resilience, enhance economic competitiveness, and propel our green transition agenda. This collaboration underscores our commitment to sustainable development and economic reform.”
The DPF marks the first phase of a comprehensive three-part program, focusing on governance improvements in state-owned enterprises, bolstering competition policies, and enhancing domestic revenue collection mechanisms. Additionally, it aims to reduce electricity distribution losses, enhance climate resilience, and ensure financial sustainability in water and sanitation services. The initiative also seeks to establish a regulatory framework for a voluntary carbon credit market.
Stephane Guimbert, World Bank Country Director for Egypt, Yemen & Djibouti, stressed the importance of these reforms in fostering inclusive growth and climate resilience. He stated, “Creating sustainable employment opportunities and building resilience against climate change are pivotal for Egypt’s future prosperity. The reforms supported by this operation are pivotal steps towards achieving a more inclusive and sustainable economy.”
Aligned with Egypt’s national strategies and development frameworks, including Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050, the DPF underscores the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s journey towards economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development.
