ReNew, India’s leading renewable energy company, inaugurated a significant 400 MW solar project in Rajasthan on Tuesday. This project is part of a larger 600 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), aiming to produce clean energy in the region for the next 25 years.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma, Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, Energy Minister Puspendra Singh Ranawat, SECI Chairman R.P. Gupta, and ReNewโs Founder, Chairman, and CEO Sumant Sinha, among other dignitaries.
The 600 MW solar power plant, spanning 2000 acres across multiple villages in the Pokran and Bhaniyana tehsils of Jaisalmer district, is projected to generate approximately 1,331 million units of electricity annually. The project features a competitive tariff rate of Rs. 2.18 per kWh.
Chief Minister Sharma highlighted the project’s importance, stating, โThe production of renewable energy from the 400 MW solar power plant in Jaisalmer is a crucial step towards making the state self-reliant. The remaining 200 MW is expected to be operational by October.โ He added that the increased renewable capacity would lower power costs and tariffs for consumers and provide savings for the government.
ReNew is also engaged in water conservation efforts in water-stressed districts like Jaisalmer. These initiatives include de-silting community lakes and building traditional water harvesting structures, benefiting over 700 underprivileged families. Deputy Chief Minister Smt. Diya Kumari praised ReNewโs contributions, noting, โThere is a significant opportunity for the renewable sector in Rajasthan. We aim to align with the Prime Ministerโs vision of Viksit Bharat to advance Rajasthanโs development.โ
Sumant Sinha, ReNewโs Founder, Chairman, and CEO, expressed pride in the projectโs completion, which is expected to power 300,000 households. He noted that ReNewโs operational capacity in Rajasthan now totals around 4000 MW out of its gross 10 GW, with investments exceeding Rs 21,000 crore, including a 4 GW solar module manufacturing facility in Jaipur. โWe are committed to expanding our portfolio in Rajasthan and beyond,โ Sinha stated.
The project is connected at Jaisalmer-II (Bhensara) of Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RVPNL) and is the largest solar project linked to RVPNL. SECI has also secured a Power Sale Agreement (PSA) with Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (RUVNL) for the same period.
Environmentally, the project is expected to offset around 1.4 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually, contributing significantly to sustainability. It has created substantial employment during construction and will continue to benefit local communities through long-term land lease agreements. Additionally, the project will utilize solar modules produced in Jaipur, aligning with the Government of Indiaโs Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
