Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL), a leading home-grown renewable EPC provider, has announced a major contract for the Engineering, Design, Procurement, Erection, Testing, and Commissioning of a 1,000 MWhr standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plant in Rajasthan, India. This project, set to be executed by 2025, is the largest of its kind in India to date and ranks among the few GWhr scale projects globally in a single location.

Currently, India’s total installed capacity for BESS stands at approximately 219 MWhr as of March 2024. According to the National Electricity Plan (NEP) 2023 by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the countryโ€™s energy storage capacity requirement is projected to reach 82.37 GWh by 2026-27, including 47.65 GWh from Pumped Storage Plants (PSP) and 34.72 GWh from BESS. With this new order, SWREL is poised to become a leading player in Indiaโ€™s rapidly growing BESS market.

In addition to the BESS project, SWREL has also secured a 20 MW floating solar project in Karnataka from the same client. This marks the companyโ€™s third floating solar project currently under execution in the country.
