Sabah Launches RM100,000 Energy Audit Grant Program For Major Electricity Users

Electricity users in Sabah’s industrial and commercial sectors consuming more than 100,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month are now eligible to apply for grants of up to RM100,000 through the Energy Audit Conditional Grant (EACG). This opportunity, announced during a recent seminar, is part of the implementation of the Efficient Management of Electrical Energy Regulations (EMEER 2024).

The announcement was made at the Seminar on EACG and Energy Management, hosted by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia in collaboration with the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS). The seminar, held at the Promenade Hotel, saw participation from various stakeholders within the industrial and commercial sectors.

Under the new program, installations and users in Sabah that are subject to the EMEER 2024 and consume more than 100,000 kWh of electricity monthly can apply for the EACG. The grants are intended to support energy audit activities at these installations, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and reduce utility costs.

The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) provided an overview of the EMEER 2024 regulations during the seminar. According to Ts. Mohammad Nizamuddin Bin Zainal Abidin, Assistant Director of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Unit, the regulations are part of a comprehensive framework established by ECoS. This includes provisions for the competency and roles of Registered Electrical Energy Managers (REEMs), general penalties, and the obligations of licensees and private installations to provide necessary information to ECoS.

The EMEER 2024 regulation represents a significant advancement in Sabah’s energy efficiency efforts. It mandates that all existing electricity licensees, contractors, competent persons, and related equipment registrations be regulated under ECoS. This regulation ensures that licenses and certificates remain valid and enforceable under the updated legislative framework.

The seminar also emphasized the importance of energy audits in identifying opportunities for energy savings and improving operational efficiency. By supporting these audits through the EACG, Sabah aims to foster a more sustainable and economically efficient energy landscape.

This initiative is expected to bolster efforts in energy management and contribute to the broader goal of reducing energy consumption and costs within Sabah’s industrial and commercial sectors.
