Windel Energy has received planning permission from the Rhonda Cynon Taf council for a new 9.9MW solar farm to be connected to the Talbot Green substation at Ynysmaerdy. This approval marks Windel Energy’s third successful planning application in 2024.
The Talbot Green solar farm is scheduled for connection in 2025, with construction expected to take approximately six months. The project will span several agricultural fields, featuring south-facing photovoltaic panels. The development will also focus on biodiversity, including the creation of an ecological corridor and the planting of native species-rich hedgerows to enhance local habitats.
Jamie Knott, Managing Director of Windel Energy, expressed his satisfaction with the latest approval, stating, “We are delighted to have been granted planning permission for this project. It’s a testament to the hard work of our team, Recurrent Energy, and our planning consultants, The Sirius Group. This is the third permission granted for Windel Energy in only a matter of months, and we look forward to securing further permissions this year that will help the UK meet its climate goals and provide a more affordable and secure energy future.”
Earlier this year, Windel Energy secured two other major permissions. In May, Cumberland Council approved a joint development with Recurrent Energy for the Harker 200MW/400MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Carlisle. In July, a Development Consent Order (DCO) was granted by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, for the 350MWp Mallard Pass Solar Farm.
Founded in 2018, Windel Energy is a privately held company specializing in renewable energy project development and asset management. The company currently has over 1.5 gigawatts of clean solar power, 3 gigawatts of battery energy storage, and 150MW of onshore wind at various stages of development.
Recurrent Energy, a key partner in these projects, is one of the largest utility-scale solar and energy storage project developers globally. To date, Recurrent Energy has completed nine gigawatts of operating solar projects and three gigawatt hours of energy storage projects across six continents.
